The Carpet and Handicraft Fair of Mogoro is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2006. Born in 1961, thanks to the initiative of a few villagers – a group of women and wood artisans, led by the municipal Authority of that time – it had the purpose of teaching the traditional art of weaving and, most of all, of educating the public to the taste of authentic Sardinian tradition in its purest form.
Thanks to this important exhibition, Mogoro has become a magnet for Italian and foreign tourists, attracted by shopping and cultural treasures of the island tradition. Made-in-Sardinia handicraft is now renowned in the Italian peninsula, but it is also being appreciated in Europe and worldwide. Therefore, each year, not only does the fair record a number of direct sales, but most of all, it is a chance for artisans to show their products to an international public, take orders for a whole year’s work and export abroad.
Yet the Fair means entertainment, too. Indeed, a rich calendar of cultural and artistic events is linked to it, along with dance, music and events of the "Estate Mogorese" (Summertime in Mogoro).
